In the 365 Family Dinners & Devotions Cookbook Kathleen Y’Barbo presents, as the title indicates, three-hundred-sixty-five recipes for every day of the year. The pages are not numbered, but you can find the recipes by the day of the calendar on the top of the pages. The book is inexpensively produced by a publishing company (and though the website of the publisher is given, it is inaccessible) on inexpensive paper stock without illustrations.

Marissa Baggett’s cookbook on sushi would be excellent except for a poor index. Nevertheless Vegetarian Sushi Secrets, a trade paperback, is still a very good cookbook with a usable Contents section for searching. In her introduction, Baggett gives us all we need to know about sushi, including the various types, a long list of ingredients Japanese sushi chefs may use, and the equipment we need.

I’ve been a fan of America’s Test Kitchen the show so I was dying to try out the recipes in the cookbook. The book is packed with many classic pie recipes from apple, pecan, key lime to not-so-familiar recipes like Portuguese egg tarts. I love a fresh fruit tart so I really wanted to try my hand at making it. Disappointingly, the fruit tart recipe in the book is not a classic French fruit tart recipe.

The scope of recipes is quite varied, and recipes are easy to follow and clearly written with varying degrees of difficulty and complexity. Photos of the recipes are nicely done, in full color, but unfortunately most of the photos are actually of the hosts of The Chew.
